March is Epilepsy Awareness Month, a time to educate, advocate, and support those living with epilepsy. While epilepsy affects thousands of Albertans, misconceptions and stigma continue to create challenges for individuals and families. By increasing awareness, we can foster a more inclusive and informed society.

Understanding Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes recurrent seizures, which can range from brief staring spells to full-body convulsions. Seizures occur due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain, and while some people can manage their condition with medication, others require specialized treatments or lifestyle adjustments.

Knowing how to recognize seizures and provide proper support is crucial. This month, we’ll be highlighting three key areas to improve understanding and response to epilepsy:
1️⃣ What is Epilepsy? – We’ll break down the causes, types, and common misconceptions surrounding epilepsy. (Stay tuned for our upcoming post!)
2️⃣ First Aid for Epilepsy – Knowing what to do when someone has a seizure can be lifesaving. We’ll provide clear, step-by-step guidance on seizure first aid.
3️⃣ How to Work with Your Physician on Epilepsy – Managing epilepsy requires collaboration with healthcare professionals. We’ll share insights on how to advocate for yourself or a loved one when discussing treatment options.
Get Involved
Organizations like the Edmonton Epilepsy Association and the Alberta Children's Epilepsy Program offer resources, support, and advocacy for those affected by epilepsy. Additionally, MyHealth Alberta provides essential information on epilepsy management and seizure first aid.
This month, wear purple, share resources, and help raise awareness. A little knowledge can go a long way in creating a more supportive and understanding community.
Stay tuned as we dive deeper into these key topics throughout the month!
