September: A Month of Awareness for Multiple Cancers

Updated: Nov 3

September is Childhood cancer awareness month.
September is Childhood cancer awareness month.

September is more than just the start of fall; it’s a pivotal month dedicated to raising awareness for several types of cancer, alongside the focus on pediatric cancer. Each of these cancers deserves attention, support, and education as we strive towards a world where fewer lives are lost to these devastating diseases.

Childhood Cancer Awareness

September is widely recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, shining a light on the brave young warriors battling cancer and the ongoing research efforts to find a cure. With nearly 400,000 children diagnosed with cancer worldwide each year, it's crucial to support organizations like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, The Stollery Children's Hospital and the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario that are at the forefront of pediatric cancer research and treatment.

Blood Cancer Awareness

In addition to pediatric cancer, September is also Blood Cancer Awareness Month. Blood cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, affect millions globally, with new diagnoses being made every three minutes in the United States alone. These cancers impact the body's ability to fight infection, make healthy blood cells, and carry oxygen, making early detection and treatment vital.

Gynecologic Cancer Awareness

September is also Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to increasing awareness about cancers of the female reproductive system, including cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. These cancers collectively affect thousands of women annually, emphasizing the need for regular screenings and awareness of symptoms for early diagnosis.

Thyroid Cancer Awareness

Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month also takes place in September. Thyroid cancer, though less common than other cancers, is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the U.S., with cases tripling over the past three decades. While the survival rate is high, particularly when detected early, ongoing research is crucial to understanding and combating more aggressive forms of this cancer.

Prostate Cancer Awareness

September is also Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, aimed at educating men about prostate health and encouraging regular screenings. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide, and early detection through screenings like the PSA test can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Lastly, September serves as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Often called the "silent killer" due to its subtle symptoms, ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Raising awareness of the symptoms, such as bloating, pelvic pain, and frequent urination, can lead to earlier diagnoses and better survival rates.

How You Can Help

This September, take a moment to learn more about these cancers and share information within your community. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness, each effort brings us one step closer to better treatments, early detection, and ultimately, a cure.

Let’s make September not just a month of awareness, but a month of action. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
